A ground-up redesign of Carnival’s cruise line experience and a new technology platform.
Digitizing the Guide for Monitoring Child Development (GMCD)
Worldwide, 250 million children are unable to realize their full developmental potential, with the majority living in low- and middle-income countries. GMCD is a novel tool that facilitates developmental monitoring and early detection of developmental difficulties of children in disadvantaged settings.
Worldwide, 250 million children are unable to realize their full developmental potential, with the majority living in low- and middle-income countries. GMCD is a novel tool that facilitates developmental monitoring and early detection of developmental difficulties of children in disadvantaged settings.

WHAT WE DELIVERED
We transformed GMCD from a paper process into a digital service together with the developmental pediatricians that created it.
To understand the context of use, and the needs/pains around the paper-based GMCD, we spent a week in Mumbai, shadowing community health workers during home visits.
We translated our findings into the design of an Android app with decision support and data management tools helping providers and community health workers plan targeted interventions.

As part of their 2020 vision, HSD partnered with Fjord to offer a human-centered service experience that unified access to the public programs administered through four divisions:
- Medical Assistance Division
- Income Support Division
- Behavioral Health Services Division
- Child Support Enforcement Division
We created a user-validated north-star vision for the Unified Web Portal for individuals to learn about, apply for, and maintain their programs with ease, confidence, and dignity.

MY ROLE
I took the initiative to find funding for this project through the Fjord Innovation Fund.
I was one of the two designers on the project, and I’m still a point of contact as the app continues to get launched in different countries.

In Fall 2019, with the support of UNICEF, Turkmenistan’s Ministry of Health has adapted the GMCD App and introduced it into its primary healthcare home-visit services as an essential instrument for timely identification of developmental difficulties and providing developmental care.
